Icon Siam
“ICON SIAM” is a major iconic attraction of Bangkok, and is known locally as the “Mother of all Malls”. It’s located on the Chao Praya riverbank in the Klongsan district of Bangkok. This shopping mall was developed by the powerful partnership of three of Thailand’s most reputable businesses including, Siam Piwat, MQDC, and Charoen Pokphand Group. The construction, completed in 2021, was managed and run by a major Thai/Japanese contractor, with whom Xypex Thailand has worked extensively over many years, on many major projects.
Due to its location on the riverbank, not so far from the mouth of the Chao Praya and the Gulf of Thailand, the sub soils are very high in chloride concentrations. Coupled with a very high-water table, it can be considered as almost a marine type environment. These factors are significant contributors to rebar corrosion and the general deterioration of a concrete matrix. To tackle the problems associated with the waterfront construction, the project design called for an ultra-low maintenance and completely watertight structure, for all the below ground levels. For these reasons, Xypex Thailand was selected to provide the required waterproofing protection and durability, as required by the architects, designers, and asset owners.
The project began in 2015 and Xypex Crystalline coating system was specified throughout the substructure, 20 metres deep, including the lean concrete slabs, potable water tanks, wastewater tanks and lift pits, together with the construction joints of the D-wall and the area for decorative water fountains. The total area treated with Xypex system’s was in excess of 65,500 m2. After the main application of Xypex Concentrate, the areas were treated with Xypex Gamma Cure, to ensure an efficient curing process and to avoid delays in the construction build time.
In addition, more than 17,400 metres of construction joints of the structures walls and slabs were sealed with Xypex’s water stop system, Corkjoint Superswell 47B, to further ensure a watertight structure.
Through the use of Xypex Crystalline solutions, this venue has been successfully protected from any potential water/moisture ingress that could lead to concrete deterioration and rebar corrosion. Xypex chemicals promote crystalline structures to form within the concrete pores and micro cracks, which prevents the penetration of water from any direction, thus enhancing the long-term service life of the asset. Moreover, Xypex benefits also provide chemical resistance (within a pH range of 3-11 for constant contact) within the concrete in the wastewater tanks, and compliance with the NSF61 and AS/NZS 4020:2018 Standards for being non-toxic and safe to be used with its potable water structures.
Recently, Xypex Australia manufactured products (Xypex Admix C-1000 NF, Xypex Admix C-5000, Xypex Concentrate, Xypex Modifed and Xypex Megamix II) achieved the Global GreenTag’s CarbonRATE certification of Carbon Zero, showcasing their commitment to the sustainability of concrete construction, for future generations.
